In the USA, we put a huge emphasis on winning – the Super Bowl, beating the stock market, Olympic medals, “best of” rankings, etc. But, what is it about winning that we care so much about?
Here are my thoughts on winning written as a poem from an athlete’s perspective.

winning is everything;
be the best
and crush the competition.
winning is marvelous
take the prize
and shine in the limelight.
winning is fleeting;
lose the admiration
and fade from memory.
winning is hollow;
obsess for first
and then ask what’s next.
striving is fulfilling;
stretch the self
and drink in the challenge.
